FAQ

Q. What is Bulldogs Unleashed?
A. Bulldogs Unleashed is a collaborative community arts project, similar to Cows on Parade.  Fiberglass bulldogs will be sponsored or purchased, brought to Batavia for painting by professional artists, unleashed for display during the summer of 2011, and then sold at auction in the fall.

Q. Who is behind the Bulldogs Unleashed project?
A. Batavia Parks Foundation, Batavia Public Library Foundation, The Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence

Q. Where are the bulldogs displayed and how do I find them?
A. The 25 bulldogs are displayed all through the downtown area. You can find a map of the locations on this website. Maps are also available at many downtown businesses, including Limestone Coffee & Tea, the Batavia Creamery, and Bulldogs Red Hots.

Q. Are the bulldogs going to be in Batavia permanently?
A. The bulldogs will be removed from the streets in September. Each of the 11 that were purchased will go to their owner. The remaining 14 will be auctioned off on September 10th at the Live Auction & Reception at the Fox Valley Country Club. The owners will then display them wherever they want. We hope to see some of them stay in the downtown area.

Q. Were any city funds used to pay for/support this project?
A. The 3 foundations fronted the money to start this project. Local businesses and families sponsored the project through cash donations and in-kind services. Profits generated from the auction will be split evenly between the 3 foundations to use on projects that will benefit the students and community of Batavia.

Q. Are these dogs strong enough to sit on?
A. The dogs are made of fiberglass and should not be sat on, or leaned on. They are pieces of art, and they are delicate.

7. Q. Why did the 3 foundations decide to do this project?
A. Other towns have been very successful with this type of project. It was done as a
community-wide cultural arts exhibit, to encourage a sense of pride, spirit and loyalty in Batavia. The money raised will help pay for scholarships, grants, and projects that will directly affect the entire community within the parks, library, and schools.

8. Q. How can I get involved in Bulldogs Unleashed?
A. Spread the word to your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. Encourage out-of-towners to visit Batavia and participate in the scavenger hunt (listed on the back of the maps). Purchase tickets to the Live Auction & Reception and consider bidding on a beautiful painted bulldog.

9. Q. If I don't bid on a bulldog, how can I financially contribute to this project and the 3 foundations?
A. We will be selling commemorative posters ($10), t-shirts ($15) and note cards with the bulldogs' pictures and information ($25 for a pack of 30). You can purchase these items at Windmill City Fest, Art in Your Eye, at the Live Auction & Reception, or you can stop at the Batavia Park District office/Civic Center to purchase these items.

10. Q. How do I know which dogs are up for auction and which are already sold?
A. On the Gallery page each dog is identified as "available at auction" or "sold."

11. Q. If I have questions, whom do I contact?
A. Check the rest of this website for more details. Or, call Nell Novak at (630) 373-9407 or Steve McKenna at (630) 406-8322
